When the rain stops on a Saturday, the first thing I look for is a place that can turn a dreary drizzle into a cocktail of colour. The Shoreditch Speakeasy opens at 5 p.m. sharp, and the moment you slip through the unmarked door behind a laundromat, the air tastes like amber and old books. The bar itself is a single, long counter of dark oak, with a glass case that holds a rotating selection of bitters. The staff greet you with a nod and a quick, “What’s the mood?” – a simple question that sets the tone for the night.

Signature Drinks and Craftsmanship

At Shoreditch Speakeasy, the house gin, “Midnight Bloom,” is distilled in a small batch of 300 bottles. The recipe uses juniper from the Black Forest and a splash of London‑grown lavender. A classic “Midnight Old Fashioned” takes 45 seconds to prepare: muddle the lavender, add the gin, a dash of Angostura, and a sugar cube, then stir with a copper spoon. The result is a drink that feels like a whispered secret. In contrast, the Rivington Rooftop serves the “Crown & Clover,” a gin and tonic with a twist of citrus, finished with a sprig of mint that smells like summer. The bartender there, a former mixologist from New York, keeps a chalkboard menu that lists the local gin producers, giving the drink a regional touch.

Atmosphere and Hidden Details

Both venues are under 100 square metres, but they feel spacious because of their layout. The Shoreditch bar uses reclaimed timber for its walls, and a hidden panel behind a stack of vintage vinyl records reveals a small back room where the staff prepare the cocktails. The Rivington Rooftop, meanwhile, offers an open terrace that overlooks the Thames. A discreet “no‑phone” rule encourages patrons to engage with each other, which often leads to spontaneous conversations about the city’s history. If you’re looking for a quiet corner, the Rivington’s back lounge is lined with velvet armchairs that feel like a secret meeting spot.

Pricing and Value

At Shoreditch, a single cocktail costs £12, while a round of four is £45. The bar offers a loyalty card that gives a free drink after every tenth purchase. Rivington’s pricing is slightly higher: £15 for a signature cocktail, with a happy hour from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. that brings the price down to £10. For those who prefer a budget, the Rivington’s “budget brew” – a simple gin and tonic – is £7 during happy hour. Both venues accept contactless payments, which speeds up the ordering process by an average of 30 seconds per transaction.

Accessibility and Practicalities

Shoreditch Speakeasy is located on a side street off Brick Lane, reachable by the Overground at Old Street station, with a 5‑minute walk. The entrance is wheelchair‑accessible, and the bar offers a small, dedicated space for people with hearing aids. Rivington Rooftop sits on the top floor of a converted warehouse in Clerkenwell; the elevator is only 12 m tall, but it can accommodate a stroller. The rooftop’s terrace has a small rain shelter that opens automatically when the forecast predicts a shower, keeping guests dry without interrupting the view. Both places have a minimum spend of £30 for tables, but you can order a single drink without any requirement.

Which to Pick?

If you’re after an intimate, story‑filled evening with a touch of mystery, Shoreditch Speakeasy is the place to go. It’s perfect for a quiet night with a friend, where the focus is on the drink and the conversation. If you’d rather have a view, a larger group, and a slightly higher price point that still feels reasonable, Rivington Rooftop offers a memorable experience with the added bonus of a skyline backdrop. Either choice delivers a weekend escape that turns ordinary evenings into something worth remembering.
