Last month, Maya, a graphic designer who lives in a two‑bedroom flat, told me she wanted a “home arcade” that wouldn’t break the bank. She had a budget of £650 and a wall that could only hold a single 24‑inch monitor. I walked her through the process, and she left with a setup that works for both work and play.

Choosing the Right Monitor

Don’t chase the latest 4K display. For most casual gaming, a 1080p monitor with a 75 Hz refresh rate is more than enough. I recommend a 24‑inch IPS panel with a 4 ms response time. Brands like AOC and ViewSonic offer models in the £150–£180 range that still deliver sharp colors and low input lag.

• Resolution: 1920×1080
• Refresh rate: 75 Hz
• Panel type: IPS
• Price: £150–£180

By selecting a monitor that sits just below the 75 Hz threshold, you avoid the extra cost of a 144 Hz model while keeping gameplay smooth for most titles.

Budget‑Friendly PC or Console?

Two paths exist: a budget PC or a console. A mid‑range PC built from parts you already own can cost around £400 if you repurpose an old CPU and GPU. A PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series S starts at £299, but you’ll need a new controller and a subscription for online play.

If you lean toward a PC, target an AMD Ryzen 3 3200G (or equivalent) and a used GTX 1650. That combo keeps you under £400 and still runs games like Fortnite at 1080p with medium settings.

Peripherals That Don’t Break the Bank

Keyboard, mouse, and headset can add up quickly. Look for bundles that include a mechanical keyboard and a gaming mouse in the £70–£90 range. A budget headset with a decent mic, such as the HyperX Cloud Stinger, can be found for about £40. Total peripheral cost stays below £150.

Desk and Chair: Comfort on a Budget

Ergonomics matter. A simple desk that measures 120 cm by 60 cm can be purchased for £80 from a local hardware store. Pair it with a basic office chair that has lumbar support; you can find one for £90. The total for desk and chair is £170, leaving room for software upgrades.

Software and Games: Free and Affordable

Take advantage of free-to-play titles like Apex Legends or League of Legends. For paid games, look for sales on Steam or the Epic Games Store; a 20 % discount on a 2020 release can save you £10–£15 per title. Allocate £50 for a few new purchases over the next year.

Connecting Your Setup

Use a single 3‑pin HDMI cable from the console or PC to the monitor. For audio, a simple 3.5 mm jack on the headset is sufficient. Keep cables tidy with inexpensive clips; a bundle of 10 clips costs less than £5.

Maintaining the Budget Over Time

Upgrade gradually. When you need more power, replace the GPU first—most modern cards are modular and can fit into the same case. Keep your drivers up to date; the latest drivers from NVIDIA or AMD often unlock performance gains without extra cost.

Linking Gaming to Everyday Life

When you’re not gaming, the same setup can double as a home office or a media center. For instance, a quick switch to a streaming service can turn your desk into a personal cinema. Final Thoughts

Building a home gaming setup on a budget is entirely possible if you prioritize essentials and shop wisely. Stick to a 1080p monitor, a modest PC or console, and affordable peripherals. With careful planning, you’ll spend under £650 and still enjoy smooth gameplay and a comfortable environment.
